Discovering Abilities: A Sicilian Learning Journey

Discovering Abilities: A Sicilian Learning Journey

Nine Year 10 students recently returned from an inspiring and educational Erasmus+ mobility trip to Sicily, which took place from April 27 to May 2, 2025. The trip, centered in Alcamo with visits to Palermo, Segesta, and Trapani, combined cultural exploration with hands-on environmental research and inclusive learning experiences.

Collaboration with Italian Partners
The mobility program was hosted by Istituto Comprensivo "S. Bagolino" di Alcamo, under the leadership of Headmaster Prof. Antonino Provenza. The program was meticulously planned and coordinated by Mr. Fabrizio Amato, whose dedication ensured a perfect blend of educational and cultural activities.

Environmental Research and Sustainability
A highlight of the trip was the students' participation in the Clean Waters Project, a collaborative initiative between our school and Istituto S. Bagolino. Students engaged in practical environmental research, collecting water samples from Castellammare del Golfo to analyze microplastic levels in the Mediterranean Sea. This hands-on experience reinforced our school's commitment to environmental awareness and sustainability.

Cultural Immersion and Historical Exploration
Throughout the week, students were immersed in Sicily's rich cultural heritage. The journey included:

Alcamo: Students presented about Gozo's culture and participated in agricultural workshops, learning about greenhouse cultivation and sustainable farming practices.

Palermo: Exploration of historical landmarks including the magnificent Palermo Cathedral, Quattro Canti, Chiesa del Gesù di Casa Professa, and the stunning Piazza Pretoria fountain.

Segesta: An immersive visit to one of Sicily's most important archaeological sites, where students explored the remarkably preserved ancient Greek temple and the hillside theatre. This visit provided invaluable insights into classical architecture and ancient Greek civilization in Sicily.

Erice: Visit to the medieval town featuring the Venus Castle, Balio Gardens, and Chiesa Madre, providing insights into Sicily's historical architecture and traditions.

Trapani: City exploration including the historic Piazza Mercato del Pesce, Torre di Ligny, and the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo.

Educational Outcomes
The mobility program successfully achieved its primary objective of developing students' soft skills through:

  • Cross-cultural communication
  • Team collaboration during orienteering activities
  • Environmental awareness and research skills
  • Cultural sensitivity and appreciation
  • Practical problem-solving in real-world contexts

Inclusive Education in Action
The program demonstrated our commitment to inclusive education, with tailored support ensuring that all nine students, including those with special educational needs, could fully participate and benefit from the experience. The varied activities and approaches helped accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
